Hello folks, he topic @ hand is uncapping cable modems. There are a lot of myths and misunderstandings about how cable modem systems work. No, unfortunately it's not as easy as just running a program and *bam* your speeds are full on balls to the wall. I will be adding to and revising this tutorial as time allows.
Cable modems run under a group of standards known as DOCSIS (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification). The differnet standards allow for different capabilities. Here is a table with the DOCSIS version numbers and their associated maximum rates.

New docsis systems bring about new features and new roadblocks in the area of unlocking cable modems or obtaining free internet service.
Their is also a European DOCSIS standard which has slightly different numbers to it...
So you want faster speeds on your cable modem eh?
Well first thing you are going to need to do is determine the type of modem you have. The easily and most covered modems are Surfboards. If you want to uncap your modem you're truly going to need a Motorola Surfboard modem. The versions to get are the 5101 series or 4100, or 4200. 4220 is a no-no, don't make the same mistake I did and accidentally buy that one!

) and read down to the section about your modem... sometimes the SB4200's can be upgraded without any hardware modifications needed (IE. TTY/RS232 serial or a 10 pin JTAG header). ost of the cable modems WILL require time and effort to uncap but it is very doable and hundreds and thousands of people are already receiving free cable internet (some even free TV) so why not you?!!! Points to remember are never ever use YOUR mac address assigned by your ISP to receive service on a hacked modem. The main thing to remember is, if you plug a hacked cable modem into your cable line, it will only be traceable through its MAC address (or through service agents coming out and disconnecting all your neighbors to find out where the bandwidth is going, AKA IMPOSSIBLE). You must use a provisioned mac address on the network, and it also must not be in use on the node. The best example of this would be call your friend J, who lives on the other side of the state and has the same ISP as you. Have him read off his MAC address on his modem and then you, using your hacked firmware, set it so your modems mac is the same as his, therefore its provisioned and receiving service. After that all you need to do is acquire the proper config file you desire on your modem and you're up and flying.
