MyBB is one of the best free scripts created in the last months and it's getting more and more recognition. It's considered to be the "free version of vbulletin" since it has so many features built in to make it work similar to the paid script. And since it's so widely used, we thought a tutorial about installing it would be a good idea.
We start by downloading the latest version. We go to MyBBoard.net and download the latest release. In the moment I created this tutorial, the latest version was 1.2.9.
Please unzip the package and look into it. You can see 2 folders: upload and documentation. We need ONLY the upload folder. We enter it and upload the CONTENTS in the folder we wish on the server. If we want to put the forums in the main directory we upload the contents from the UPLOAD folder in there, if we want it on a forum directory, we create a folder called forum and upload the contents there.
We need to also have a database created for this. If you have cpanel access, this is how you create a username and a database in it.
If you type in the URL of the forums you'll have a nasty error. That's why we need to put the URL of the forums and install too. As an example: I had to install mybb on my new site ... To be able to get to the installed, I typed (don't worry, the link won't work since I have the forums installed already) .. and was able to follow the steps:
1. Welcome .. after we read the welcome message we hit NEXT
2. License agreement .. please read carefully and hit NEXT
3. Requirements check ...
We need to set some permissions to 777 .. here is the list of files:
inc/config.php
inc/settings.php
uploads
uploads/avatars
REFRESH the page and hit NEXT
4. Database configuration
Place the settings you made for the database in cpanel earlier and hit NEXT.
5. Table creation .. should work OK, hit NEXT
6. Table population ... should also be OK .. hit NEXT
7. Theme insertion .. NEXT
8. Board configuration .. pay attention to this and configure your forums. When ready, hit NEXT
9. Create administrator account and then NEXT
10. Finish setup.
And enjoy your new forum
